Thread: Steam Workshop ruined Open

It's an unfortunate aspect of Open -- the ability to easily obtain loot/mana through 3rd party means. The only way to avoid it is to start over and play ranked, or only play rooms that you host in. It stinks because when I first started to play DD pre-eternia shards DLC, I first played on open. I had gotten a Barbarian and an Apprentice to level 74 without means of powerleveling (Glitterhelm) or mods. Regardless of that, the fact of amount people using gear gotten through means of mods of any sorts were rising and quite frankly was ruining the game for myself. Therefor, I decided to start completely over on ranked. Leveling a lowbie is boring at first, but as I went on, playing on ranked was much more enjoyable for me.

Warmonger, I've seen some of your posts around here. You seem like a nice fellow. I wouldnt mind carrying you around in ranked up until you get good gear to stand for yourself. And as I, I'm sure there are quite a few forum dwellers that could do the same with way higher stats than me.

He wasn't condemning Warmonger's having started (and spent serious time) on Open. What Chris seems to be saying, and he's correct, is that an informed new player to the game has no reason not to play on Ranked. Playing legit on Open limits your ability to use the legit levels you've earned; playing legit on Ranked does not. You can export your Ranked characters to Open at any time, when you feel like playing mods and/or play without the legitimate leveling and equipment restrictions of the game. When you want to level up and progress legit, you can do so back on Ranked. As stated by Nexus, the legit levels are identical in both modes. The only form of leveling or progress that Open offers that Ranked doesn't offer is the illegitimate kind.

As well as really OP illegitimate gear. But that depends on playing choice. I have the same amount of fun playing in open (offline and split screen) as I would in Ranked. Again difference between the two? Achievements and not -as many- hacked players in ranked. Or stores asking for ridiculous amounts of mana in open, just wont happen. Not when I can go into the Dev-kit and make chests that drop 600 mil each in a lobby-set level.

Bonus to open? You don't have to spend 40 hours a week just farming mana to upgrade the... mediocre quality gear that you spent another 40+ hours trying to get to drop. But again, play style choices here.

Obviously those choices have ruined the online playing quite a bit for people who like to play with others, and keep it clean. As I posted in another thread I play open because I don't have time to start all over in ranked. Almost 400 hours invested into open as it is. I threw some numbers out and it would take 600+ hours to get 6 new ranked characters leveled up and geared out. 93 hours a week for a month and a half straight. No thanks.

I started on open well local actually to avoid online headaches such as lost connections.

I put in over 100 hours With base game features NO mods.

All though I liked the stability of local and open over Steam's disconnects I stick with ranked to get achievements my self.

The past 2 days I have been spending a little time on open trying out a new mod.

Basically hop on a table in the tavern and hit level 90 and get 2bil mana and a bunch of gear.

This gear is what I would call hacked to hell. The mod came from The steam Workshop.

And thus all though completely bogus it remains legit since legit tools were used not 3rd party stuff. Cute huh?

I am one hitting everything! A NM Kraken takes 2 hits 1 for tentacles 1 for the over grown sardine himself.

1 hitting that beast felt like great payback!

That being said I have NO idea how people can enjoy gear like that!

I love Crushing an Ogre in one hit with my Hawk Stance on my 100% legit barbarian in Ranked though!

I have put 1400+ hours into DD most of it on ranked.

For me the legit victories are my favorite by far.

I am going to hit 3k,4k even 5k stats eventually.

Then I can B slap the kraken and truly enjoy my self!

Faster leveling and extra mana are both great time savers for sure.

Features like all the above are what Open was made for and I say enjoy any way you like!

As for me I'll stick with ranked for now!

I dont understand why would you need so much stats to take care of kraken? Even with 6k stats you cant possibly one hit kraken with weapons. All you need is a good strategy. A monk with good resists and decent near 2k something hp and a GOOD seahorse. By good i mean 13k+ dmg (~180+^). Fire up that hero boost and watch kraken melting in seconds.

I have a 299^ horse 20k dmg and it does some insane damage to kraken. With hero boost it LITERALLY one hit all tentacles. And ofc i use buffed heal+str drain for survivability. I never take over 2mins to take care of kraken.

I got a dozen or so characters to the 74-83 range legit in open and was at the point where I was breaking past wave 20 in Aquanos Survival. The bigest problem with ranked is needing a stable connection to the servers to play. I am sure plenty of people here have lost progress in maps due to random disconnects.

The main reason I played so much on open is because I pretty much only played solo or duo with my friend, at th time he didn't have an internet connection at his house and even now that we have started playing on ranked since he got the internet we miss the virtually lag free, play anywhere benefits of LAN.

Really though that means the addition of steam workshop would have had no effect on use because we knew their was a good chance anyone else on open could have been using mods and hacks so we completely avoided them.

I actually discovered first hand that the HP of the Kraken makes very little difference to how fast it dies yesterday when I carried 3 players through NMHC Boss Rush after only ever beating it Solo/Duo. You can say similar for the Genie King and Dragon, but it is much easier to hit those two with a single really powerful attack and take out more than the percentage of their HP that makes them run.

I always thought they should have called "Ranked" something less intimidating like "Official" mode instead. Since I think a lot of casuals got the idea from the start that Ranked was for hardcore competitive people only like it is in most games. Where as for DD it's merely the standard way to play the game if you want less cheaters in your games. But if you knew what it was and chose Open then you really have no reason to complain. You had to have known from the start that anything goes in that mode.

I thought mods were legit in Open. Trendy has stated that before; unless I mis-read what was posted.

Because mods are legit; I would think there are no real hackers in open since anyone can legitimately mod the game to their munchkin delight.

Ranked does get hackers. But they come and go as VAC and bans are imposed.

I guess I was having difficulty following the thread until I substituted 'un-modded' for 'legit' in the various postings.

I guess it would be nice if ppl put a [M] at the beginning of their public game's name to denote modded or not.

The toxic empire map is challanging I would say that it is good. I started in open. I saw lots of hacked gear and thought that it was interesting. there were lots of infinite xp and mana maps when I was playing before moraggo. I moved to ranked because I had a friend who played ranked and there was too much hacked gear in open. Lots of shops selling hacked items if the player wanted them. It just became easier to get the items now. There now instead of 1 out of 4 people using hacked gear its what 1 out of 2?

in my opinion Steam workshop is a good thing it can allow people to find those few maps that are challenging. I am suprised at how you were able to find NM games without hacked gear before steam workshop.
