Im new to PC DD's and I didnt know there were two types of online open and ranked and i played on ranked because thats what im used to because its like the console but there werent alot of servers (like 4) to join so am i better going on ranked or did i pick a bad time whats more popular?

Everyone plays ranked. the good players play in private matches.

also most people that play ranked have a minimum cap on the game of 74 so they don't get lvl 20s joining their NMHC survival games. if you play around 5-9 CST (usa) msg me on steam (same username as here) and i can help you get up to level where you can see all the games.

I usually have my filter set to nm only and see ~15-30 games with open slots

Thing is that there's an automated level range, even if people don't care about it it's often in effect and the majority of people has a higher level. Thus as further you get as more games you can see.

Ranked mode is the only fully "real" mode in the game so to speak. It's the only way you have access to features like Steam achievements, official leaderboards, and so on. You can port the data from here to other modes, but not vice-versa. Open mode is for playing mods, testing the effects of upgrades if you don't want to blow your money, etc. And yes, because it's not monitored properly, there's likely tons of hackers on there.

It's a bit confusing when people make the switch from console to PC, as it was for me, when trying to play solo the first time. Your first impulse is to play "Local" (like you did on 360/PS3,) but again that mode's data is restricted to local mode - and so it's not really "legit" in the sense of inter-connective online play. None of that data will carry over when and if you decide to play with people online. If you want to play solo and local, you go into Ranked, start a Private Match, then pause your game and click "hide match."
