Cloud saves/syncing: only through the Steam cloud?

After occasionally playing DD on my iOS device (and lamenting all the stuff that seemed to make DD so great on PC/Mac) for more than a year, I finally caved in today, and purchased the May Hurray bundle just for the sake of DD. And boy, am I looking forward to finally enjoying the overbloomed living daylight out of DD the way it should be enjoyed (not necessarily with a mouse and keyboard; I was supremely comfortable with the interface and controls for DD on iOS, but enjoyed with all the DLC, and without the artificial limitations imposed upon the iOS and Android versions).

I do have one initial question, though: what kind of cloud saving solution does DD use? Do my hero files only sync between Steam-powered copies of DD (thanks to the Steam cloud), or can I download the stand-alone version from the May Hurray bundle and find synced save files there as well?

(I'm planning to play DD across several laptops/desktop computers, and I would prefer not to go through Steam, if there is another cloud backup protocol for saving and syncing my heroes.)

If you play on Open you can manually copy over the DunDefHeroes.dun file between your computers and avoid the Steam cloud sync. Doesn't seem to work for a lot of players unfortunately anyway.

Otherwise if you play on Ranked your saves are stored on our servers and nothing will need to be copied when you go from machine to another.
