Can't play on XBOX Live

I just bought this game, and I am enjoying it, but I got a problem. Perhaps this happened to someone else and could help me.

I got the full version of the game, on XBOX 360, but when I try to play via XBOX Live, it won't let me. It has the following message:

XBOX Live not allowed

A logged in account is not permitted to play XBOX Live

Is it because I need to become a gold member, or this some technical issue?

A gold membership is required for Xbox live play, the error message is just rather nonspecific.

Aww crap...I knew it was something like that. Well, I just started playing Dungeon Defender, so I'll practice with the classes before I sign up for GOLD then. Thanks for clearing it up.
