What wave do I need to start at in order to earn a pet?

Hi guys, just downloaded the newest patch and thought I'd jump in and test out the survival wave starting thing. I started at wave 14, finished it, but did not receive a pet. Is there a maximum wave you have to start at in order to receive the pet? Or have pets been removed upon selecting the start wave?

since you get no loot for the first wave you do that seems to include end of wave rewards.
