Dungeon Defenders II game Status:
Want to make the best of my monk. looking for advice on armor, weapon, and skill point allocation.
Depends if you wan't Tower, Hero or Hybrid.
Beforehand, I'll assume you're or at least is considering tips for 74, while starting on nm hc. If you're looking for leveling stage, anything goes, really...
Tower
If you wan't a strictly aura monk, you'll need to look for in the gear and max: +TowerAtk (THE most important stat), +BoostTower (for steroids on your towers when 9 ogres are bashing your defenses like "GIMME CANDY NAOOO!!") and +TowerAspd (Tower atk speed).
Keep in mind that auras deplete with the more mobs that cross them and also when it ticks at mobs, so increasing your +TowerAspd will deal higher damage with Lighting Aura, has a higher chance to Enrage mobs with Enrage Aura and so on but will also deplete your auras faster.
+TowerRange - is subjective and relative to your taste...some like to increase for huge auras and some like to keep it small (albeit the fact you can simply push + or - at your keyboard to decrease or return auras to normal size);
Caveatn2: nm reduces the size of your auras dramatically, so plan accordingly;
+TowerHealth - increase the longevity of your auras, but truly, you only need as much for them to last 1 or 2 waves before you need to repair and your tower gear normally will give you this much without you worrying about this stat.
Weapon - Look for the same stats as your gear. If you intend to keep your builder out for waves, level the RANGED damage of it some, to kill stuff and replenish mana in case of using a genie. More on weapon for DPS build
For Pets - Normally try to get any of the ones I'll talk about with the previous tower stats on them:
Genie - Used on starting waves to finish building your layout faster, it gives you mana based on your atks. The higher the Genie atk and your HERO atk, the higher the mana replenished till a cap - There's a very good post detailed with it's math on mana replenished and atk needed;
Guardians - Boost your towers considerably: App (Boost towers and auras damage) , Huntress (Boost towers aspd and auras tick speed) , Monk (Boost towers range and auras size) , Squire ( Towers health and auras longevity) - Focus on grabbing an Apprentice guardian, since it'll give the highest benefit to your auras and to other classes towers as well. Guardian most important stats are Tower Boost (It can be upgraded manually up to 20, but you can have it spawn with values of 40 or higher, but 40 is the cap), Boost Range (The distance it's Boost will cover) and Number of Defenses Affected (Need a guardian with at least 1 on this and enough upgrades to up to 5; Can only be upgraded every 8-10ish levels);
Fairy/Imp - Heals you and your allies; Situational...if you're tanking a boss or some strat or map where you need constant replenishment;
Giraffe - A nm hc chicken normally tend to have high stats and enough upgrades that if you're lucky, this could be your best tower pet to build;
Monk Animus - Baring ^discrepancy, the best dps pet out there. Good if you wan't to keep your build out during waves, as you'd normally have very low damage and this pet could kill spiders or stray mobs on you
DPS
For a DPS monk build, you'll wan't: +HeroAtk (To increase damage), +HeroHealth (To survive mobs hitting your head) and +HeroBoost (For super sayan mode)
+HeroSpeed caps at 99, so it normally caps very soon. If you ever gotta choose from gear with negative stats and this is one of the options for negative, go for it as long as it doesn't drop you below 99. With correct gear you'll put 0 stats on this and still have a surplus on it
Gear - ALWAYS, as in ALWAYS ALWAYS upgrade your gear resistance before upgrading anything else. A DPS that can't stay alive can't do ****, so surviving is the highest priority to actually be able to dish damage. Also nm halves your resistances, so if you have 90% Normal resist from your gear, you're looking at 45% on nm.
As you may have guessed, you need to aim for 180% Resistance for nm. Since you won't be able to get all your defenses to that high level, your priority should be Normal > Fire > Poison > Lightning. Level Resists whenever possible, in this order, until you cap Normal at 180%, then you can move to 180% Fire and so on...
Keep in mind your Character Spreadsheet will only show up to 90%, so you need to add your gear pieces resists together to find at what level you are.
Weapon - Monks deal damage currently as ranged, with it's Chi beams. Basically what you need in a weapon is a decent starting Ranged Damage, a positive projectile speed and +Projectiles stat on it. Those would already make it an acceptable weapon. Level +Projectiles whenever possible and Ranged Damage everytime.
Normal weapons +Projectile caps at +4, so you should maximize it and then go with Ranged Damage. Keep in mind +Projectiles can only be leveled every 10 levels or so.
A special case is the Nosferatus, reward from the Halloween Spook map on Insane+ difficulty. This special weapon can have up to +6 Projectiles and baring the same number of ^ is the best weapon you can find.
Hybrid
An hybrid build is basically an Aura build that can stay outside on waves and deal some damage. This is normally done to keep upgrading and building defenses during waves, to maximize build time and get defenses in place faster or rebuilt before you loose control of the wave.
Personally, I don't really like hybrid monk since you can't really build a full defense with monk auras and thus you wouldn't benefit that much from staying out to keep building or rebuilding defenses.
Monks have basically 2 auras that are consistently used: Ensnare (To reduce mobs speed and thus give time for other towers to do their mojo) and Enrage (To keep mobs pinned there and thus slow down mega waves on difficult maps), so you basically can call your monk, build these in key choke points and switch to a full dps char.
My monk is my main and I gear him fully dps and even so, his gear gives him around 400-500 tower stats, wich I found to be enough if I need to drop those towers to compliment defenses in nm hc maps.
To build this type of monk, you need to have a mix of the towers stats listed above, with as high as possible +HeroDamage.
The main difference is on gear and weapon, you focus on Tower stats but you'll upgrade as a DPS hero, leveling resists before anything else and the weapon you'll level damage, +projectiles as a dps instead of stats.
Hope this helps some...
Now if I could only find a Nightmare halloween build that my 400/600/300/400 tower App/monk could do...
At what time you intend to do those? Myself, I'm still looking for a perfect NOS so company would be much appreciated and fun!
Probably going to get 2-3 in now before I get something to eat, then do some more in about an hour.
