View Full Version : Whats the Point in the Barbarian?

I leveled a barbarian to 74 when it first came out but left it there and never bothered now I came back, 78 now and playing nightmare. I don't see the point.
Why not just play a Squire?
jumping really high?

I robbed the gear off another toon
2k hero health
2k hero dps
2k Leap
2k Slicy thing
2k in all the tower stats(stances).
2x fast swords with 18000 damage 11000 fire damage.
so I have 78050 hp, 412104 in nightmare, 12000 less than a squire.

but I only seem to do 1.3-1.8 mill dps 300-400k in nightmare
the weird jump that seems to bug out all the time and send my flying off cliffs doesn't seem to increase my dps much and the Slice thing seems to be a dps loss.

Tornado stance makes you run at other normal hero speed and jump really high
Lightning stance kills you
Siphon stance drops your resistances so Djinn you can't reach can kill you
Turtle stance makes you take less damage but... so slow you may as well be dead
and the last stance just seems like 2 massive hits that work out as less damage in the long run??
and they all Rape your mana?

vs.... Squire BLOODRAGE!! gives you tornado stance speed but you can't jump very high + 1.8-2.3 million dps 400-500k in nightmare
Also bloodrage effects my pet, making it do Stupid damage!!
and if I pop circular slice every now and then I get the 10 mill spikes for about 5 mill dps (1 mill in nightmare)

I can press my right mouse button and block, this kinda takes the piss out of turtle stance!
Countess has Call to Arms and the knockback that can save lanes and push ogres off cliffs!

Barbarian... can....... jump really high??

I even put the same gear on my huntress, with a 18000 gun, did 2-5 mill dps and pie shot can hit whole lanes, I can snipe Djinns and save towers. I run at tornado stance and I can pretty much be invisible for an entire wave, take 0 damage, making healing stance and turtle stance kinda pointless.
I can even stand on a tower with a Gene and Mash M to feed mana to builders or upgrade myself with minimall dps loss.

tho I can't Jump very high.

I read the guide that says use a Gene so you are able to play properly and maintain auras without LEACHING all the mana out of the map?
but this means you can't have a Pet of DOOM like goblin cupid doing Massive dps and healing you?
a 262 goblin cupid with 13490 does 1.3 million DPS on a tavern dummy with piercing arrows with bloodrage up and 2.1 million dps in Nightmare with the pet bonus. (500k and 700k without)
Even if I use my mages Djinlett for mana its still not getting bloodrage so it only does 200k, I have no block......

Why would I play a 300-400k no tower class that drains mana really fast
vs..
a 500-600k tower class with a 2.1 million dps pet that heals you, A block button that reduces all damage to insane amounts?

what am I missing about the barbarian?
Bloodrage seems to Demolish all the Barbarians damage and stance stuff, you even move faster.
Circular slice leaves the barbarian instants in the dust.
Block takes way less damage than Turtle stance.


is it all about the... jumping really high?
I played a Guardian in SwTor just for force leap so I can see the appeal but... really?

turtle stance lets you block and attack at the same time. i can tank 5 or more ogres at once with that and siphon stance np. a wall goes down I can hold the lane by myself. in fact i can hold most spawn points on most maps indefinitely by myself if i want to. lets see your hunter or squire do that! right now i'm putting out almost 3 million dps in the tavern. i build with my squire, huntress and ev and then i take out the barbarian to maintain everything and dish out the pain!

jumping really high and the move speed is very nice though! i agree that the barbs skills suck though. i posted a few suggestions for fixes in the suggestion forum already.

Genie isn't necessary. But it helps for long battles like boss fights. I also suggest using hammers for barbarian. And IMO squire is nothing without mana(rage) when I can survive a lot longer with a barb then squire with 0 mana. It's all about using all his stances and abilities at the right time. I destroy things with my bob compared to squire. Just takes time and getting used to like all other classes. Also, IMO Barb is more of a tank then the Squire. My barb is able to tank the Spider Queen on NM HC without any troubles while a squire couldn't.

I consider barbarian more of a tanky DPS than a full DPS. The reason is simple: MAssive health, combined with a genie and siphon + turtle stances? Invincible. I rarely die with barbarian, and usually unless my DPS isn't up to snuff, I get enough kills to keep my mana at full. Not to mention the bonus mana from the genie. I can take down ogres with barbarian. Though it's a lot harder and longer of a fight in nightmare. But in insane? Piece of cake.

I like the barbarian for his stances, and if you use the female one, you even get decent run speed (albeit with some lower hp).

Barbarian has very nice dps without any need for of blood rage, but add a monks hero boost or a countess call to arms and its a killing machine if you use the right swords.

Lighting stance also now disrupts unsumonning djinns as well. Hawk stance can insta kill certain big mobs.

All in all it is a very fun class to play if all you gonna do is go and dps things and not build. I used it, with stances, to tank misty boss for a long long time while my friends helped dps the queen.

If it really is better then a squire, I am not sure, but in a group of friends I find it very fun at least.

Two upgraded transcendent hammers with Hawk stance = one-hit kill on NM ogres up to 4 million health. You can jump in, deal an insane amount of damage, then jump out with very minimal risk of being bludgeoned or, more importantly, webbed.

Anytime I'm in a pinch and surrounded by enemies, I turn on turtle and siphon stance; instant full health while dishing out damage (instead of risking dying by attempting to flee, find a safe spot, taking the time to heal, then jumping back into battle).

Though he's a terrible solo class, he by far is the most versatile DPS character out there. In fact, he's my only DPS character :)

My main issue I found is pets, Bloodrage has such a Massive effect on pets.
hero damage is Nerfed into Oblivion in nightmare so Tavern damage is meaningless, but Pets get a Damage bonus in Nightmare.

Not sure whats going on but my pet hits for 60k, 2.5 times a second, with 4 projectiles,
so it does 600k dps
I pop bloodrage and I am suddenly hitting for 321k so 3210k dps!!


My barbarian only does 400k + 600k pet, but the squire is doing 500k + 3210k dps pet....

"Tanking ogres" vs 3 million piercing dps on Ogres that also kill the ogres/mobs behind that
"Lighting stance also now disrupts unsumonning djinns" vs 3 million dps on the Djinns?
"Hawk stance = one-hit kill on NM ogres up to 4 million health" vs 3 Million damage PER SECOND!!




I guess in huge long fights like spider queen the barbarian can stay alive with web immunity when the Squire gets webbed and is unable to block, but the squire can hold down block and still do 4x more damage than the Barbarian(and a Djinnlett makes this forever)

Why does bloodrage make my pet do over 5 times more damage?
