Stuttering problem

So the problem is, that after wave 8 the game starts stuttering and sound starts going haywire. If I quit the game, whole machine locks and I need to reboot. Hardware: Q6600, Asus Maximus II, 4GB, Radeon 6950@6970

I have tested new ati catalyst 12.3 drivers, and no effect. I tested low quality, and no effect.

Could be related to an issue I'm experiencing--severe, incongruous frame rate drops.

I suspect all this 'patching' is having some hidden ill effects, not merely clogging up bandwidth...
