Yes, I understand why you need mana tokens for purchases over 2bil, but if its under 2bil, why do people still prefer tokens?

I do not trade however my guess would be that they prefer to have the token because they are consistently at or near the 2bil mana cap. It allows them to "store" more then the 2bil mana cap and it makes you (the person paying) take the mana loss upgrading the token.

There are 2 mana caps in this game. There is a soft cap at 200 mil that you can get from playing the game. You can also go over the 200 mil cap, upto a hard cap of 2 billion mana, by trading or selling items from your AFK shop.

Mana tokens are items that a player upgrades til its value is 200 mil mana. These items are stored and can be used to store more then the 2 billion hard cap. Once you need the mana from the token, you just sell it to the bank.

A couple of reasons for tokens over straight mana.

1) You dont always need mana until you buy a new piece. Nice to store it for when you need it rather than just having it and not being able to sell more stuff.

2) It allows you to make bids on items over 2bil. For example a phenominal piece of armor is being sold on forums, max most people can offer it 2bil, with mana tokens you can offer more instantly.

3) Allows you to store infinite amounts of mana for next patch.

flip the question - why would you prefer pure over a token you can sell at any time?

you are able to keep many mana tokens but you cant keep more then 2b mana pure. if you need mana, you can just sell tokens but you cant turn pure mana easily into a token.

Regarding the bolded section, sellers may offer incentives to use mana tokens. My latest auction valued 200m mana items at 250m.

So what's a good item to be used as a mana token? Since upgrading different stats may cost more to upgrade than the final sell value?

I was about to ask the same question, thanks!
