Hi there.
I'm not an expert at this game. I'm not even amazing at this game, but I've noticed over and over again that the people whining about this patch seem to come from a group of people that think strategy involve doing the same thing over and over again, and then complaining that it's working any more.
There's a quote out there that goes as follows: "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome" I will be using this quote as a guide to my argument.
To me, given the level of vitriol regarding the 15% damage ramp is childish, ignorant, and down right disrespectful. I have a tower apprentice, I could SOMETIMES beat NM Endless Spires on HC. My stats were not perfect, but they were nothing to be scoffed at. After this patch I know that I cannot come close to beating it. I usually die on Wave 7, and without some kind of buffing from a guardian, the towers fall quickly. I was a little irritated at first, because I was really getting to point where NM was seeming not so daunting. However, for kicks I gave a junky set of mythicals to my squire, his stats were like 500/575/200/190. VERY sub-par by most standards.
Without looking up any layouts I jumped into a NM HC Deeper Well. First try was a resounding success, got a Flawless Victory with out any struggle at all, but what was most rewarding was that I was able to use my squire's and app's towers in concert to produce a LOVELY defense that I didn't think was possible.
After this success, I decided to turn it up and tried ES NM HC, again without looking up ANY layouts.
I struggled at first, spider spawns are difficult to account for when making defenses on the fly and I lost a few Harpoons/Bowling Balls. However, I remembered this little tower on my app that only costs 3 DU and is EXTREMELY versatile. I placed a few of them at points that were getting trashed by spiders/DEW and those towers were much safer. I soared through the first 3 waves. I got scared on Wave 7, because two Ogres with 1.7 mil HP seemed like a tall order for my towers doing 23k damage to take down, but it worked. I screamed out in joy that things were coming together. Wave 8 dawned upon me, I was so ecstatic that I knew I was making dozens of mistakes. ( I mean, I didn't even have a guardian out, just an un-upped genie with 618 dmg!). However, I upgraded most of my defenses to level 3, and began wave 8. It went well for the most part, until I got taken down by a group of spiders and a DEW. Nevertheless, determined to see my build win or lose, I watched my squire's body lie on the ground while the red wave bar slowly crept up. 150/468...241/468...370/468. 409/468... I thought I would have victory at last... THEN
Dundef.exe has stopped working...
Sure I was disappointed, and even a little angry, I haven't played since last night, but I know I'll fire it up again tonight after school and work. The point I'm trying to make here is that this game has been (and still is!) a constantly evolving process, there really is no other game like it out there, certainly not one that has given me such a mix of emotions from joy, anger, pride, and laughter, and even a bit of despair. This game may not be perfect, TE is not perfect, but none of us are. The fact that such a small company could put together a game like this is a truly remarkable achievement, and to whine about such simple things like patch changes is truly pathetic. I am anything but good at this game, I haven't even managed to beat MM on INSANE yet, let alone attempt it on NM. Nonetheless, I am still playing this game, I'm still learning how to use these characters, I do have the slight advantage of my significant other, who is a dedicated partner and we can DUO many maps where others may only be able to solo. However, I am willing to learn new ways and new methods of beating this game, sure it may suck that MM and Fireball towers can't act as the foot soldiers of your defense, but should they really be? The description of MM towers say that they're not particularly strong on their own, so it makes sense that they should be scaled back somewhat. I personally find them more than adequate for doing what I had them do in my build. I can't imagine what would be possible if I got my squire up to the level of my app, which is somewhere in the range of 490/940/400/600. I only hope that soon the Monk/Huntress can get up there too, which unfortunately seems unlikely with the hard cap of 15% on Ensare, but life is life, maybe they'll change it to 5%.
All in all, we as consumers should expect changes, especially to a game like this that is so fresh and innovative. I can clearly remember the days when people would complain about SQUIRE towers being overpowered and that the apprentice needs to be brought to the level of the squire, and NM intially made apprentices much more versatile than squires. That has changed slightly, as it should, if things didn't change than people would quit playing much quicker and in greater numbers than because of a poor patch. If you really think that this game is unplayable now, because your one character can't do everything, then you really do, suck at this game. Now quit whining and go try something different, you'll be back at Misty before you know it, and maybe with more than just an app and monk.
